The White House spoke with G7 leaders, including foreign ministers from France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, to discuss a coordinated response to Iran’s attack on Israel. US President Joe Biden stated that he would not support an Israeli attack on sites related to Tehran’s nuclear program, following Iran’s firing of about 180 missiles at Israel. The G7 leaders unequivocally condemned Iran’s attack and Biden reiterated the United States’ full support to Israel.
The US State Department is in discussions with Israel on how to respond to the missile attack, but is urging for restraint in any actions taken. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced that Israel has barred the United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, from entering the country, a move deemed unproductive by US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Guterres was declared ‘persona non grata’ by Israel, reflecting broader Israeli criticism of the United Nations’ response to attacks against Israel. During an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, Guterres condemned Iran’s attack on Israel while also calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and progress towards a two-state solution. The White House has signaled a coordinated response with G7 leaders against Iran’s attack on Israel, while also urging for restraint in Israel’s response.
