The Women’s Road Race at the UCI World Championships saw a three-woman breakaway with Caroline Baur, Sara Martin, and Nina Berton leading the peloton. The race was marred by tragic news of the death of Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer in a fall during the junior road race on Thursday. Despite this, the race continued with participants observing a minute of silence in her memory.
Key contenders included defending champion Lotte Kopecky, Demi Vollering, Kristen Faulkner, Kasia Niewiadoma, Elisa Longo Borghini, and Grace Brown. The weather conditions proved challenging with heavy rain making the course slippery.
The race took place over a 154km course with 100km to go, Baur, Martin, and Berton had a lead of one minute over the peloton. Reining champion Kopecky launched an attack later in the race but was closely followed by other contenders in the bunch.
As the race progressed, various riders attempted to bridge the gap to the lead trio, but ultimately, it was Kopecky who emerged victorious, defending her title with a strong performance. The absence of radios in the race added an extra level of challenge for competitors.
The event also highlighted the strength of several British riders, including Olympic silver medalist Anna Henderson, who aimed for a podium finish. Despite the tragic circumstances, the race continued with a high level of competition and sportsmanship on display.
