The Chicago White Sox suffered their 121st loss of the season, breaking the MLB’s all-time record set by the New York Mets in 1962. The team won the AL Central in 2021 but has been on a decline since, winning only 81 games in 2022 and 61 last season. The White Sox have won 39 games so far this season with two games left.
Offensive struggles have plagued the White Sox, ranking near the bottom in major statistical categories and last in hits, runs, home runs, batting average, RBI, total bases, OBP, and slugging percentage. First baseman Andrew Vaughn leads the team with a .248 batting average.
The team started the season 3-22, the worst 25-game start in franchise history. Chicago also lost 21 consecutive games at one point, setting a new franchise record and becoming the first team since 1988 to do so. Despite winning nine games each in May and June, the team only managed seven wins combined in July and August.
After Friday’s loss, the White Sox humorously posted a picture to social media indicating they would avoid reading comments from fans. The team mascot was shown closing a laptop with the caption “slams laptop shut til tomorrow.” This season has been a challenging one for the White Sox as they face the end of a historically difficult year.
