Tragic news: Ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince, 29, and her mother pass away within a day of each other

Boston Ballet principal soloist Michaela Mabinty DePrince passed away at the age of 29, and just one day later, her adoptive mother Elaine DePrince also died from an unrelated illness. The family spokesperson Jess Volinski shared the news on Facebook, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support following Michaela’s death and elaborating on Elaine’s passing during a routine procedure for surgery. The statement clarified that the deaths of the mother and daughter were completely unrelated. Michaela, who was born in Sierra Leone during the civil war, was adopted by Elaine along with her friend Mia. Despite facing rejection due to her vitiligo, Elaine decided to adopt both girls, leading Michaela on a path towards a career in ballet. She became the youngest ballerina with the Dance Theatre of Harlem in New York City at 17 and later became a principal soloist at the Boston Ballet. Her love for ballet was evident in her numerous performances and dedication to her craft. The family has asked for privacy as they grieve these losses, with no cause of death for Michaela yet shared. Both Michaela and Elaine DePrince’s deaths were sudden and unrelated, leaving behind a legacy of strength and perseverance in the face of adversity.
