The Malian military government has successfully thwarted a terrorist attack on a military police centre in Bamako, the capital city. The attack, which occurred in the Feladie district near the main airport, was repelled by the army. The situation is now described as being under control, with security sweeps ongoing in the area.
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and explosions during the attack, prompting the temporary closure of the Modibo Keita international airport and a nearby high school. Residents were advised to stay away from the area and await further official reports.
Mali has been embroiled in conflict with various armed rebel groups since the military coup in 2021. The current military government, led by Colonel Assimi Goita, has opted to forge alliances with Russia and its Wagner mercenary group, breaking ties with European partners and former colonial power France. Allegations of abuses against civilians during military operations against rebels in the north have surfaced, leading to denials by the army and its Russian allies.
The attacks in Mali reflect a broader trend of military takeovers in the region, with neighbouring countries like Burkina Faso and Niger also experiencing coups. Despite these challenges, the military government in Mali continues its efforts to combat rebel groups and maintain stability in the country.
