Four people, including the man with the knife, one police officer, and two innocent bystanders, were wounded at a Brooklyn train station after police officers shot at the man threatening them. The incident began when two officers confronted a man who entered the station without paying his fare. A 49-year-old bystander was in critical condition, the suspect was shot several times but was stable, and a 26-year-old woman suffered a graze wound. The wounded police officer was expected to recover. Interim Police Commissioner Thomas Donlan promised a thorough investigation into the shooting. The man threatened the officers with a knife and was shot by them after Tasers failed to incapacitate him. Mayor Eric Adams described the man as a “career criminal” with over 20 arrests and a history of mental illness. Video footage of the shooting was not immediately released, but a cropped image of the man holding the knife was shared. The incident raised concerns about innocent bystanders being harmed in such situations. The subway station serves the L line in Brownsville, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority confirmed the presence of cameras inside the train, on the platform, and at the entrance. In 2019, there were two accidental shootings by NYPD officers resulting in the deaths of fellow officers during confrontations with crime suspects.
