After 933 days of war, the conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate with recent developments highlighting the ongoing violence and diplomatic tensions between Russia and Western countries.
The latest reports on September 15, 2024, show that at least seven people were killed in Ukraine due to Russian shelling in various regions. The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed to have destroyed 29 Ukrainian drones targeting Russian regions, while the Russian Navy conducted exercises with China to repel night attacks by unmanned boats.
In the realm of politics and diplomacy, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other officials have urged current PM Keir Starmer to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles inside Russian territory, even without US support. Additionally, NATO’s principal adviser suggested that Ukraine has the military justification to strike deeper into Russia using Western weapons.
Meanwhile, a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine saw 206 individuals released, with President Zelenskyy attributing this success to Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk. President Joe Biden is set to discuss Ukraine’s war strategy with Zelenskyy and provide a new aid package in the coming days.
European governments are also being urged to halt welfare benefits to Ukrainian men of military age residing in their countries to encourage more troops to join the fight. The Group of Seven foreign ministers condemned Iran’s alleged export of ballistic missiles to Russia, with Tehran calling for diplomatic solutions but rejecting Western pressure.
