Taiwan military asserts China lacking invasion capability, considers other strategies

China does not currently have the full military capability to invade Taiwan but is increasing its arsenal and exploring other options to threaten the island, such as inspecting foreign cargo ships, according to Taiwan’s defense ministry. The tensions between China and Taiwan stem from China’s belief that Taiwan is a part of its territory, which is strongly rejected by Taiwan. Despite never signing a peace treaty, both sides have been in conflict since the Republic of China fled to Taiwan in 1949.

Taiwan’s defense ministry sent an annual threat assessment to lawmakers outlining China’s efforts to improve its military capabilities, including developing new weapons like the H-20 bomber and hypersonic missiles. In response to these threats, Taiwan plans to increase its defense spending in the upcoming year, focusing on missiles, submarines, and other weapons to deter China.

China’s recent war games around Taiwan included the interception and inspection of foreign cargo ships by Chinese coast guard ships, a move aimed at practicing cutting off communication with Taiwan and blockading the island. Despite the tensions, Taiwan’s President Lai has expressed willingness to engage in talks with Beijing but has been rejected, with Beijing warning against any moves towards independence. President Lai emphasizes the importance of strength in achieving peace and vows to continue improving Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities to protect its sovereignty.
