In a recent announcement, the Minnesota Vikings have made several cuts to their roster to comply with the 53-man roster deadline. Among those released is safety Lewis Cine, a first-round pick in 2022, who failed to impress in a deep safety room. The team has also waived running back Kene Nwangwu, a fourth-round pick in 2021 known for his explosive kick returning abilities. Other notable cuts include Myles Gaskin, Bobby McCain, Andre Carter II, and James Lynch.
Injured players such as T.J. Hockenson and Gabriel Murphy have been placed on the physically unable-to-perform list and injured reserve, respectively. The team also made their first round of cuts on Monday, which included running backs DeWayne McBride and Mo Ibrahim.
The Vikings will begin their season on the road against the New York Giants on September 8th, led by quarterback Sam Darnold. Rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s debut has been delayed due to a preseason injury.
Before the roster cuts, the Vikings made several notable moves during the offseason, including drafting McCarthy and trading up to acquire pass rusher Dallas Turner. They also signed contract extensions with wide receiver Justin Jefferson and left tackle Christian Darrisaw, while adding free agents to overhaul the defense, including former Defensive Player of the Year, Stephon Gilmore.
Additionally, the Vikings have added 17 players to their practice squad, including some of the players released from the main roster. The full list of practice squad players includes names such as N’Keal Harry, Henry Byrd, and Lucky Jackson.
