The Paris Paralympics kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony at Place de la Concorde, attended by French President Emmanuel Macron. The competition will run until September 8, with events taking place at 18 of the 35 Olympic venues. Ticket sales have been strong, with over 2 million sold, and wheelchair users will have access to Paris buses and specially adapted taxis.
The Paralympics aim to not only showcase athletic talent but also raise awareness about the issues faced by disabled individuals. International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons hopes that the Paris edition will bring attention to the needs and rights of people with disabilities on a global scale. He believes that the games will have a significant impact on changing perceptions and attitudes towards disabled individuals worldwide.
The Paralympics have historically been a platform for showcasing the incredible abilities and strength of Paralympians, while also addressing the importance of inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities for all. Parsons is optimistic that the Paris Paralympics will help push the agenda of disability rights to the forefront of global discussions and ensure that people with disabilities are not overlooked or marginalized in society.
