Warnings issued for Hawaii’s Big Island as Tropical Storm Hone approaches

A tropical storm warning has been issued for Hawaii’s Big Island as Tropical Storm Hone approaches with 50 mph winds. The storm is forecast to pass near or south of the island on Saturday night into early Sunday. The National Hurricane Center issued a warning for Hawaii County, and swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip currents across the island chain. Hawaii’s Big Island could see around 10 inches of rain. Hone was located 425 miles east-southeast of Hilo with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, moving west at 16 mph. A “red flag” warning was issued for leeward areas of all islands on Saturday due to high winds increasing the risk of wildfires. Additionally, there is a hurricane to the east of Hone, named Hurricane Gilma, which is also heading towards the Hawaiian Islands but is forecast to become a tropical depression before reaching the state. Coastal watches or warnings are not in place for Hurricane Gilma.
