Douglas Coleman III of the Bears injured and removed from the field on a stretcher following a tackle against the Chiefs

During a preseason game between the Bears and the Chiefs, Bears cornerback Douglas Coleman III was immobilized and taken to the hospital after making a tackle that resulted in a neck injury. Coleman, a former CFL standout, had his head up as he tackled Chiefs’ Cornell Powell, but his neck bent awkwardly to the side upon impact. Trainers and doctors rushed to the field to attend to Coleman, who was seen moving his extremities and giving a thumbs-up before being loaded onto a cart and taken to the hospital for evaluation. The Bears went on to win the preseason game 34-21.

Coleman played college football at Texas Tech, where he moved to safety as a senior and was an All-Big 12 selection. Despite going undrafted in 2020, he signed with the Broncos as a free agent and spent time on their practice squad. He then spent the past three years with the Ottawa Redblacks as a safety and linebacker, appearing in 17 games last season and recording 60 tackles, four sacks, three interceptions, and scoring both an interception and fumble return for touchdowns. Coleman’s injury highlights the risks associated with football, but initial reports indicate that he was responsive and in stable condition.
