Justin Simien aims to highlight the essential role of Black creativity in Hollywood’s success

Justin Simien, the director, writer, and producer behind “Dear White People,” has created a four-part documentary series for MGM+ called “Hollywood Black.” This series delves into the presence of Black talent and the concept of Blackness in Hollywood since its inception. Inspired by the work of iconic Black Hollywood historian Donald Bogle, Simien explores how Black filmmakers and actors have made significant contributions to the industry.

The series features conversations with Black Hollywood representatives such as Ryan Coogler, Gina Prince-Bythewood, LaKeith Stanfield, and Gabrielle Union, among others. It also includes discussions on classic and contemporary films from Black filmmakers, highlighting works like “Black Panther,” “Selma,” and “Medicine for Melancholy.”

Simien’s series sheds light on the impact of stars like Richard Pryor, Dorothy Dandridge, and Pam Grier, as well as filmmakers like Spike Lee and John Singleton. It also addresses the industry’s co-optation and abandonment of Black-cast films and explores the contributions of Black LGBTQ filmmakers.

Simien acknowledges that the series could have been longer to fully encompass the richness of Black film history. However, with the guidance of showrunner Shayla Harris, “Hollywood Black” offers a diverse and comprehensive look at the role of Black talent in shaping the film industry.

The series airs on MGM+ and aims to celebrate and elevate the contributions of Black filmmakers and actors throughout Hollywood’s history. In doing so, “Hollywood Black” emphasizes the importance of recognizing and honoring the impact of Black talent in the entertainment industry.
