Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has stated that his troops are successfully achieving their goals in the offensive into the Russian region of Kursk. The offensive, which began on August 6, marks the biggest attack since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Zelenskiy’s remarks were supported by Ukraine’s top commander Oleksandr Syrsky, who confirmed that progress was being made in the Kursk region.
Germany has provided a new military aid package to Ukraine, including an air defense system and ammunition, showing unwavering support in the fight against Russian invaders. Meanwhile, British prime minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson reiterated Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine and the use of Franco-British manufactured long-range Storm Shadow missiles.
Amid the conflict, an evacuation order has been issued for the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk as Russian forces advance towards the area. In contrast, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has blamed the United States for attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines in 2022, highlighting the complex dynamics of the conflict.
Despite calls for peace talks, Russian aide Yuri Ushakov stated that Moscow is not ready for negotiations due to Ukraine’s attack on the Kursk region. The tensions in the region continue to escalate, with reports of Ukrainian airstrikes targeting Russian infrastructure and Russian forces capturing Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk region. Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s upcoming visits to Russia and Belarus highlight the geopolitical complexities of the conflict in the region.
