The Arkansas Attorney General’s office is investigating a Fort Smith property owned by Olivet International Inc., a major Walmart supplier. The investigation was prompted by concerns raised by Gov. Sarah Sanders and Agriculture Secretary Wes Ward about possible ties to the Chinese government and national security issues due to the property’s proximity to a military base.
Olivet International, headquartered in California, manufactures a wide range of products and has operations in multiple countries including China, Taiwan, and the Philippines. The company denies any ownership, financing, or executive ties to the Chinese Communist Party. The property in question was purchased by 4811 S. Zero Street LLC, affiliated with Olivet International, and was intended for manufacturing patio furniture or luggage.
The investigation is part of Act 636, a law designed to address national security concerns by prohibiting ownership or investment in agricultural land by entities with connections to China. Records show Pei-te Lin, an employee of Olivet International, was involved in the LLC’s purchase. Other Walmart suppliers in the region are concerned about potential negative impacts.
Arkansas Times attempted to reach Olivet International for comment but received no response. The company states on its website its commitment to American manufacturing. The investigation into the property marks the fourth instance the attorney general’s office has targeted entities in Arkansas with potential Chinese ties. Controversy surrounds the ownership of the property and its implications for national security and regional business interests.
