High school star athlete Luke Ryerse has made a big decision to flip his verbal commitment from Alabama to Minnesota to play baseball and football. In a tweet, Ryerse thanked the staff at Alabama for the opportunity but cited recent changes on the football staff as the reason for his decommitment. He expressed excitement about representing his home state at the University of Minnesota and thanked the coaches for the opportunity to play both sports while pursuing a business degree.
Ryerse has been recognized for his versatility on the baseball field, being named Twin Cities Pioneer Press East Metro Player of the Year as a sophomore. He is expected to focus on pitching for the Gophers under new head coach Ty McDevitt. In football, Ryerse is a kicker and punter, earning a five-star ranking from Chris Sailer’s kicking prospect rankings. His older brother, Grant Ryerse, also played for the Gophers from 2017-2020.
With his commitment, Ryerse becomes the second in-state special teamer to join the Gophers’ 2025 recruiting class, alongside Daniel Jackson from Alexandria. Ryerse’s decision to play for Minnesota showcases his commitment to representing his home state while excelling in both baseball and football at the collegiate level.
