Diplomats work to avoid regional conflict following deadly rocket strike from Lebanon on Israel.

The Israeli government has vowed retaliation after a rocket strike from Lebanon killed 12 youngsters in the Golan Heights. Israel blamed the Lebanese group Hezbollah, backed by Iran, for the attack, which they said was the deadliest on civilians since the conflict with Hamas began. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that Hezbollah would pay a “heavy price” for the strike, while the defense minister vowed that they would not be exonerated. The Israeli military carried out strikes in Lebanon in response, but both sides denied involvement in the attack.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized Israel’s right to defend its citizens but cautioned against escalation, while Lebanon’s Foreign Minister urged Washington to urge restraint from Israel. He also noted that the US government had sent a message to Hezbollah to show restraint. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has been ongoing since October, with Israel targeting Hezbollah military infrastructure and Hezbollah launching rockets in response.

The violence has claimed the lives of hundreds in Lebanon, mostly Hezbollah members, and dozens in Israel. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced on both sides of the border. The situation has raised fears of a wider regional war in the Middle East. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing to de-escalate tensions and prevent further violence.
