Former President Donald Trump is making a return to Minnesota, a traditionally Democratic-leaning state that he believes he can win over this year. Trump is scheduled to hold a rally in St. Cloud on Saturday alongside his running mate JD Vance. The expectation is that Trump will face Vice President Kamala Harris in November, rather than President Joe Biden.
During a GOP fundraiser in May, Trump expressed confidence in his ability to win Minnesota and made specific appeals to the iron mining range in the northeast part of the state. Trump is targeting blue-collar and union workers in hopes of shifting their allegiance to the Republican party.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is among a list of Democrats being considered as a potential running mate for Vice President Harris due to his appeal to Midwesterners and union workers. In 2016, Trump came close to defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton in Minnesota, and he further narrowed the gap in the 2020 election against Joe Biden.
Trump’s campaign director has described Minnesota as a battleground state where Trump compares favorably to Biden. The campaign has been actively recruiting staff and opening offices in the state, with Republican congressional candidate Tayler Rahm even joining as a senior adviser.
On the other side, the Harris campaign remains confident in their chances in Minnesota, with communications director Lexi Byler stating that Trump and Vance are out of step with the state’s values. The Democrats are working tirelessly to ensure a victory for Harris in November.
