Former Republican vice-presidential nominee JD Vance’s controversial comments about the U.S. being run by “childless cat ladies” have resurfaced following his selection as Donald Trump’s running mate for the 2024 presidential election. These remarks, made in a 2021 interview with Tucker Carlson, have sparked backlash from figures like Jennifer Aniston, Whoopi Goldberg, and Republican strategist Alyssa Farah Griffin.
Vance suggested that politicians like Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, and AOC, who do not have biological children, are controlling the future of the Democratic Party without a direct stake in the country. Despite backlash, Vance defended his comments as sarcastic and reiterated the Republican Party’s pro-family stance, contrasting it with what he called the Democrats’ anti-child position.
Celebrities like Aniston and Ella Emhoff, Harris’ stepdaughter, have criticized Vance. Aniston, who faced fertility struggles herself, expressed disbelief at Vance’s remarks, while Ella Emhoff highlighted the loving family dynamic she shares with Harris, her father Doug Emhoff, and her brother Cole.
Whoopi Goldberg also condemned Vance for diminishing the value of individuals who do not have children, pointing out historical figures like George Washington who did not have biological children but played important parental roles.
