An arson attack on France’s high-speed railway network before the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony has caused widespread disruptions for around 800,000 people across Europe, including athletes. The fires targeted remote locations, damaging critical signalling cables in pipes along the TGV system’s tracks. The railway operator, SNCF, has increased security and is working to repair the damage. French government ministers have condemned the vandalism, with Minister Delegate for Transport, Patrice Vergriete, stating that some TGV trains will remain disrupted in the coming days. Minister for Sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, emphasized the seriousness of the attacks, calling them an action against France. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin expressed hope for swift arrests, while SNCF CEO, Jean-Pierre Farandou, mentioned ongoing police investigations to identify the culprits. Despite the disruptions, SNCF is working hard to restore traffic conditions as quickly as possible. The company said that, in coordination with law enforcement, surveillance has been increased on the ground and in the air to prevent further incidents. The attacks have not been directly linked to the Olympics, but they have caused chaos for travelers and athletes alike.
