The separatist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) has organized a Khalistan Referendum at a municipal plaza in Calgary, Alberta, after authorities said they could not control how the public space was used. This event will be the second referendum held on government property in Canada, leading to complaints from India to Global Affairs Canada. The referendum is scheduled to take place on Sunday and features posters of individuals like Talwinder Singh Parmar, the mastermind behind the bombing of Air India flight 182 in 1985. The plaza also displays Hardeep Singh Nijjar, SFJ’s principal organizer in British Columbia who was murdered last year. His killing strained relations between India and Canada after allegations of a potential link between Indian agents and the murder. This issue was addressed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. India’s High Commission in Ottawa has protested the use of public property for the separatist event. Previous referendums were held at different government facilities but were canceled due to violations of the rental agreement. However, the referendum ultimately took place at another venue. This demonstrates the ongoing tensions and controversies surrounding the Khalistan Referendum, highlighting the complex relationship between India and Canada.
