Renowned Japanese artist Hiroshi Yoshida, German artist Eric Kips, and Danish artist Hugo Vilfred Pedersen are among the foreign artists who captured the essence of India in their works. These artists, along with others from various countries, are currently being showcased at the DAG gallery in New Delhi in an exhibition titled Destination India: Foreign Artists in India 1857-1947.
The exhibition features over 90 works by 40 artists, focusing on the unique perspective of foreign artists who were drawn to the everyday life and culture of India. Works such as A Fruit Vendor, India by British artist Carlton Alfred Smith and Benares by Dutch painter Marius Bauer depict scenes of working women, markets, and landscapes of India in a modern light.
According to DAG CEO Ashish Anand, the exhibition aims to shed light on a missing chapter of Indian history by showcasing the artwork of foreign artists who were interested in the culture and people of India, rather than just its grand monuments. The exhibition offers a different perspective on colonial India, capturing the essence of the country through the eyes of these artists.
Curated by art historian Giles Tillotson, Destination India highlights the modern sensibility of foreign artists who wanted to paint the street scenes and everyday life of India. The exhibition provides a glimpse into a diverse range of artworks that offer a unique perspective on India during the colonial period.
