A vote on the two-child benefit cap is set to take place this evening in the Commons, potentially leading to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s first rebellion within his party. The SNP’s amendment calling for the cap to be scrapped has been selected for a vote, with MPs from across the party joining forces to demand its removal. Former Chancellor John McDonnell has announced his support for the SNP amendment.
Meanwhile, former Home Secretary Suella Braverman, filling in for James O’Brien on LBC, expressed her approval for former US President Donald Trump, stating that she would vote for him if she were an American citizen. Braverman also criticized the Progress Pride flag, calling it a “monstrous thing.”
Additionally, Health Secretary Wes Streeting mentioned the hope of reaching a pay deal with junior doctors that is both deliverable and affordable, while Shadow Health Secretary Victoria Atkins criticized the cost associated with the demands of the junior doctors committee.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves informed the cabinet of the need for “difficult decisions” regarding public spending, highlighting the financial pressures inherited from the previous government. Reeves’s comments echo those made earlier by Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall.
Lastly, plans for Keir Starmer to meet with Ursula von der Leyen have been postponed until the autumn, following scheduling conflicts. The meeting was intended to discuss the UK’s desired reset in EU relations, but will now take place at a later date, potentially in August or September.
