Following a period of hot and dry weather, Slovenia was hit by severe storms and torrential rain over the weekend, resulting in over 230 weather-related incidents, mostly in northern regions. In Kokra, a village in the north, three houses were evacuated due to a landslide caused by heavy rains, and a bridge was swept away after the river burst its banks. Local roads became impassable, and firefighters had to help move a group of Belgian scouts whose camp was swept away by the storm.
At the Logar Valley in the north, a landslide blocked a road to the Rinka waterfall, and two hikers needed assistance descending the mountains. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in the Karavanke mountain range and Posavje region in the center of the country.
Slovenia is no stranger to extreme weather events, having suffered its worst national disaster in August 2023 when flash flooding wreaked havoc across the country. In response, authorities have been working on a comprehensive flash flood plan to better equip Slovenia to handle intense rainfall associated with climate change.
As cleanup efforts continue and residents assess the damage caused by the recent storms, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of being prepared for unpredictable weather events and the need for proactive measures to mitigate their impact in the future.
