The evacuation orders came in July, leaving us with one choice – a Gaza flat destroyed by bombs

Amidst the devastation of war, one family from al-Fukhari neighborhood in Khan Younis, Gaza, recounts their harrowing experience of displacement. Originally determined not to leave their home, the constant bombings eventually forced them to flee to a refugee camp. Living in a burnt apartment with limited resources, the family struggles to survive among the debris and ruins.

The family’s displacement began gradually, seeking refuge at a nearby hospital as the bombings intensified. Eventually, they had no choice but to evacuate their neighborhood after receiving an order from the Israeli army. With nowhere else to go, they sought shelter in the remains of the sister’s bombed apartment, facing the daunting reality of starting over in a war-torn environment.

The refugee camp, once a place of refuge, now stands as a site of destruction following an Israeli ground operation earlier in the year. With limited access to water and basic necessities, the family faces immense challenges in adapting to their new living conditions. The fear of collapse in the unstable building adds to their daily struggles, especially with young children to care for.

Living among the remnants of their sister’s home, the family reflects on their past displacements and the grim reality of their current situation. Despite the overwhelming despair, they remain resilient in the face of unimaginable circumstances, clinging to hope for a better future amidst the ruins of war.
