In a joint statement released on Saturday, all stock exchanges and clearing corporations in New Delhi assured that they were unaffected by a global outage of Microsoft systems. This comes after a major IT crash on Friday that impacted airline systems, banks, TV channels, and financial institutions. Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu confirmed that airline systems were now working normally and all issues were expected to be resolved by noon.
The outage was caused by an update to an antivirus program, affecting Windows users running the cybersecurity software CrowdStrike Falcon. Microsoft stated that the issue began on Thursday, while CrowdStrike has rolled out a fix for the problem. George Kurtz, the CEO of CrowdStrike, apologized to all organizations and individuals impacted by the incident.
Despite the widespread disruptions, operations at airports and airlines are being closely monitored by the ministry to ensure travel readjustments and refunds are managed efficiently. The incident highlighted the reliance of businesses on IT systems and the potential risks associated with software updates.
The fallout from the IT crash underscores the importance of cybersecurity and the need for organizations to have contingency plans in place to handle such incidents in the future. The government and businesses are working to resolve the issues and minimize disruption to daily operations.
