A global Microsoft outage caused by a CrowdStrike software glitch is leading to mass flight cancellations and delays at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, affecting not only airlines but also banks, TV stations, health, and emergency response systems. This outage is happening during the busiest summer MSP has experienced in five years.
As of noon, over 160 flights had been canceled and more than 230 were delayed at MSP, with thousands more canceled and delayed nationwide. Travelers are urged to contact their airlines directly for the latest updates before heading to the airport to avoid congestion.
The outage is expected to have a domino effect into the weekend, impacting the rebooking of passengers. Some airlines at MSP were unaffected, and the situation was slowly improving by Friday afternoon. Travelers faced uncertainty as they waited for their flights, with disruptions also being reported in state municipal services and local sheriff departments.
Metro Transit experienced online system disruptions but confirmed that buses and trains are operating normally. Expect delays at Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services centers, although new DVS Now kiosks at Cub Foods locations are still functional. WCCO News, among others, was also affected by the outage and is working to rectify the issue.
