Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has announced that the state’s critical IT systems have been restored following a global outage caused by an automatic software update from CrowdStrike. The outage affected approximately 1,400 servers and 3,300 workstations, impacting less than 20% of all devices across executive branch departments. The Iowa Department of Management’s Division of Information Technology quickly responded to the outage, with IT staff working around the clock to restore all systems and devices.
Governor Reynolds praised the state’s cybersecurity capabilities and emphasized the importance of investing in services to protect state infrastructure and improve services to Iowans. The Minnesota Department of Transportation also faced technical issues with Microsoft, affecting services such as OSOW Permits in Minnesota SUPERLOAD and the call center.
Other Minnesota state agencies, including the Department of Revenue and Department of Human Services, were impacted by the global IT outage. Systems such as e-Services for filing tax returns and the NETStudy 2.0 system were temporarily unavailable. Minnesota IT Services is currently working to restore these systems.
Governor Reynolds expressed gratitude for the swift response of the Department of Management’s Division of Information Technology and reiterated the state’s commitment to maintaining strong cybersecurity capabilities to ensure the security of critical IT systems. Services to Iowans have now resumed as normal, and IT staff are working to fully restore all affected systems and devices over the weekend.
