A protest disrupted a performance of the Broadway musical “Suffs,” which focuses on the suffragist movement, with a banner reading “Suffs Is a White Wash” and chants of “Cancel ‘Suffs! “The protest, lasting only 20 seconds, was quickly dealt with by theater staff. The show’s producers, including Hillary Clinton, stated that no one’s safety was compromised during the incident. The musical has won two Tony awards and addresses racism within the suffragist movement while highlighting the contributions of Black women.
The protesters, who describe themselves as “anti-racist, queer feminists,” criticized the show for being a “rehashed white feminism” and a “betrayal of the next generation of feminists.” The producers and creative team opted not to directly respond to the group’s complaints.
This incident marks the second disruption of a Broadway show in recent months, with a climate activist group interrupting a performance of “An Enemy of the People” in March. The group chanted “No theater on a dead planet!” The Broadway community continues to face challenges as it navigates themes of social justice and activism within its productions.
