Taiwan accuses China of seizing fishing boat near Chinese coast | Military News

Taiwan is demanding that Beijing release a Taiwanese fishing vessel and its six-member crew that were seized from outside Taiwanese waters near the Kinmen Islands. The boat was fishing for squid when it was boarded and seized by Chinese coastguard officials. Taiwan’s coastguard has dispatched patrol vessels to try to rescue the fishing boat but was blocked by Chinese coast guard ships. The boat was taken to China’s Weitou port, where the crew, including Indonesian migrant workers, are being detained.

Taiwan has urged China to release the fishermen and explained that in previous cases, fishermen were released after paying fines for operating during China’s no-fishing season. Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration has also called on mainland China not to use political factors in handling the situation. Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that they will assist the detained Indonesians. This incident is not the first time Chinese authorities have seized a Taiwanese fishing boat in their waters.

Both Taiwan and China have detained each other’s fishing boats in the past, with Taiwan detaining five Chinese boats so far this year. Chinese maritime enforcement and coastguard ships have been operating around the Kinmen Islands since February after two Chinese fishermen died trying to flee Taiwan’s coastguard. Taiwan has issued alerts to fishing and transport authorities to be cautious of potential risks due to increased Chinese coastguard activities in the region.
