Nicole Mitchell Removed from Committees and Caucus Meetings During Burglary Investigations in Minnesota State Senate

Minnesota state Sen. Nicole Mitchell is facing challenges within the Senate and legal system following burglary allegations against her. Senate Majority Leader Sen. Erin Murphy announced that Mitchell will be removed from her committee assignments and caucus meetings while the investigations continue. Mitchell played a deciding vote in her defense against a GOP-led effort to strip her voting powers in light of the allegations.

Mitchell was charged with burglary after being found in the basement of her stepmother’s house in Detroit Lakes. Authorities claim she confessed to breaking in to retrieve sentimental items after her stepmother stopped speaking to her. Mitchell denied the allegations, stating she was at the house to check on a family member with Alzheimer’s.

Following Mitchell’s charges, Senate Republicans filed an ethics complaint against her, with some calling for her resignation. An Ethics Subcommittee will meet on May 7 to discuss the complaint. Mitchell, who was elected in 2022 and is in her first term, has a background as a TV meteorologist and Air National Guard commander.

In addition to the criminal case, a separate ethics complaint has been filed against Mitchell by lawmakers in St. Paul. The Senate Subcommittee on Ethical Conduct will consider this complaint alongside the legal investigation. Mitchell’s situation has led to significant debate within the Senate as questions continue to be raised.
