Meloni of Italy’s party emphasizes no place for fascism among members

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy’s Brothers of Italy party has called for the expulsion of members who idolize Italy’s fascist past. This comes after a video surfaced showing members of the party’s youth wing making fascist salutes and chanting “Sieg Heil.” Meloni condemned their actions, stating that there is no room in the party for racism, antisemitism, or nostalgia for totalitarian regimes. Although Brothers of Italy has neo-fascist roots, Meloni has distanced herself from the far-right and presents the party as mainstream conservative.

Opposition parties have criticized the party, claiming that it is a haven for extreme right-wingers despite Meloni’s efforts to cultivate a moderate image. Meloni emphasized the need for transparency and consistency within the party and stated that those who do not understand the party’s values are not welcome. The undercover investigation by Fanpage revealed disturbing behavior among youth members, including chants of “Duce” in reference to Mussolini and antisemitic comments in group chats.

Two youth members resigned in response to the investigation. Meloni has denounced the methods used by the newspaper but acknowledges that the party must address any instances of extremism within its ranks. She is determined to ensure that the image of Brothers of Italy aligns with its values and mission, distancing the party from any associations with Italy’s fascist past.
