Beryl, initially classified as a Category 5 hurricane with 165 mph winds, is now weakening as it moves west towards the Gulf of Mexico. Authorities in Jamaica are warning residents to take the storm seriously, as it is expected to bring hurricane-force winds, storm surges, and damaging waves. Storm surges could raise water levels six to nine feet above normal. Even if Beryl does not make landfall on Jamaica, it could still cause devastation. Residents living in low-lying areas or areas prone to flooding are being advised to evacuate to shelters or safer ground. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has urged residents to take precautions and prepare for the worst as the storm approaches.
