North Korea’s Recent Missile Test Indicates a Growing Arms Race with South Korea

North Korea announced on Tuesday that it had successfully tested a new ballistic missile with a “super-large warhead.” The missile, named the Hwasong-11Da-4.5, was launched on Monday with a 4.5-ton dummy warhead. While South Korea already possesses missiles with large warheads, North Korea’s latest test is seen as an escalation in the arms race between the two countries.

The South Korean military has accused North Korea of exaggerating its capabilities and pointed out that one of the missiles launched on Monday crashed after an abnormal flight. The United States has also raised concerns about North Korea supplying missiles to Russia in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

The missile test comes following North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in June. North Korea has claimed to have tested technology for launching several nuclear warheads with a single missile, but South Korea has cast doubt on this claim.

In response to North Korea’s growing nuclear threat, South Korea has increased its military spending and developed ballistic missiles with large warheads to target the North’s nuclear arsenal. South Korea has also procured American stealth jets and is working on developing even larger warheads for their ballistic missiles.

The recent missile test by North Korea is seen as a success of great significance by the ruling Workers’ Party. Kim Jong-un has used these meetings to lay out policy goals and solidify his power. Delegates at the latest meeting were seen wearing pins bearing Kim’s image, symbolizing their loyalty to the leader.
