Live Updates: Israel Launches Strikes in Southern Gaza Following Evacuation Orders

Israeli forces issued evacuation orders for large parts of Khan Younis and Rafah in Gaza, prompting residents to flee as strikes were carried out in the area overnight. The evacuation orders and strikes came despite promises to scale back major ground operations. Israeli officials stated that they are close to ending the military offensive in Rafah but will continue operations to prevent Hamas from regaining control.

The United Nations estimated around 250,000 people would have to evacuate from southern Gaza. Recent operations aimed at rooting out Hamas fighters have resulted in heavy casualties and widespread devastation in areas such as Shajaiye, Jabaliya, and Zeitoun. Many residents who had returned to their homes following previous conflicts were forced to flee once again.

Israeli forces have conducted raids to deal with renewed insurgencies by Palestinian militants, aiming to erode Hamas’s forces over time. Retired Israeli Brigadier General Amir Avivi stated that raids would continue until Hamas forces are significantly weakened. Residents expressed frustration over the continuous cycle of leaving and returning to their homes amidst the ongoing conflict.

The situation in Khan Younis appeared less intense on Tuesday, as fighting seemed to be concentrated in Rafah. However, the wide-scale evacuation order in Khan Younis suggested a potential renewal of military operations in the area. General Avivi explained that Israeli troops would gradually target Hamas fighters over time, with the goal of reducing the need for a large military presence in Gaza. The continuous cycle of raids and evacuations has left many Gazans feeling that the situation on the ground remains unchanged.
