Hurricane Beryl Grows Stronger, Poses Potential Catastrophic Threat | Weather Update

Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 4 storm ever recorded, has intensified into a potentially catastrophic Category 5 storm. It made landfall in Carriacou, Grenada, causing damage to power lines, houses, and flooding streets. The storm is now heading towards Jamaica after hitting other southeastern Caribbean islands with catastrophic winds and storm surges.

Grenada’s Prime Minister reported one casualty on Carriacou, with communication cut off on other affected islands like Petite Martinique. The storm flattened Carriacou and brought surges that inundated coastal communities in Barbados. Streets from St Lucia to Grenada were filled with debris, with some banana trees snapped in half by the powerful winds.

Jamaica issued a hurricane warning while tropical storm warnings were in effect for parts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Experts attribute the storm’s rapid formation to climate change, as warmer temperatures in the North Atlantic provide fuel for intense hurricanes. This early and rapid formation of such a powerful storm is rare, with predictions of above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic this year due to unseasonably high ocean temperatures.

In the face of the approaching storm, residents across the Caribbean have been boarding up windows, stocking up on supplies, and preparing for potential impacts. While Jamaicans were calm, anticipating last-minute panic, officials in Mexico have also begun preparations for Beryl’s arrival. With Beryl’s move towards Jamaica and continued intensification, the region remains on high alert for potential damage and impact.
