Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Grenada’s Carriacou Island as a Category 4 storm with 150 mph winds, causing widespread damage. There were no reported deaths or injuries, but communication issues were reported. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines shared photos of destroyed buildings. Jamaica issued a warning as the hurricane is forecasted to pass near the island. Beryl is the first Category 4 hurricane on record to form in June. Beryl is expected to move westward across the Caribbean, bringing potentially catastrophic wind damage. The atmospheric environment may become less favorable, but Beryl is forecasted to maintain hurricane strength until it reaches the Yucatán Peninsula. In Barbados, emergency shelters were opened, businesses closed, and water lines shut as a precaution. The India cricket team was among those stranded due to the worsening weather. The hurricane is expected to weaken to a tropical storm as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico.
