Top French Film Directors Detained on Sexual Abuse Allegations

French authorities have detained two prominent arthouse film directors, Benoit Jacquot and Jacques Doillon, on charges of sexual abuse as part of a growing #MeToo movement within the French film industry. The accusations against the directors date back to the 1980s and include claims of rape and sexual assault by several actors, including Judith Godreche, Isild Le Besco, and Julia Roy.

Godreche accused Jacquot of rape and Doillon of sexual assault when she was a minor, describing Jacquot as having a manipulative relationship with her from the age of 14. Other actors have also come forward with complaints against the filmmakers, leading to their detention for questioning by Paris police.

The directors deny the allegations, with their lawyers arguing that their detention is unnecessary and that they should be presumed innocent until proven guilty. Activists say that for too long, the French cinema industry has allowed for abuse to go unchecked, leading to a reckoning within the industry.

Godreche, who has become a leading voice in France’s #MeToo movement, expressed her emotions on Instagram, calling for strength and justice. The detention of Jacquot and Doillon follows the resignation of Dominique Boutonnat, head of a top cinema institution, after he was convicted of sexual assault in 2020. Cinema legend Gerard Depardieu is also facing trial for sexually assaulting two women and charges of rape, highlighting the ongoing efforts to address sexual abuse and harassment within the French film industry.
