Prominent Minnesota supporters of President Joe Biden are standing by him as the Democratic nominee despite a poor debate performance that raised concerns within the party. Governor Tim Walz defended Biden’s leadership capabilities and criticized former President Donald Trump’s lack of truthfulness. Walz emphasized the importance of substance over style in governance and dismissed calls to replace Biden on the ticket, urging unity within the party. DFL Party Chair Ken Martin also expressed support for Biden, calling him the leader needed to move the country forward. Despite some Democratic voters expressing concern over Biden’s debate performance, others like Diana Cumming and Robbin Rouillard remain committed to supporting him in the upcoming election. Meanwhile, Minnesota Republicans seized on Biden’s debate performance as a boost for President Trump’s reelection efforts, with Party Chair David Hann questioning Biden’s ability to handle the presidency for another term. U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer also raised doubts about Biden’s fitness for office, suggesting it could benefit Trump in the November election. The next debate between Biden and Trump is scheduled for September, following their formal acceptance of their party nominations. Both major political parties in Minnesota have until late August to submit their presidential nominees for the November ballot.
