Severe weather in Switzerland has caused significant damage to infrastructure and resulted in at least four deaths. Swiss Federal Council member Ignazio Cassis expressed concern about the country’s ability to weather future storms, stating that the accumulation of such events shows how vulnerable Switzerland is. Three people were killed in a landslide in Maggia Valley, while flooding and landslides have impacted Ticino canton. Swiss President Viola Amherd urged people to follow authorities’ instructions and take precautions as the situation remains tense. Neighbouring countries like Italy have also been affected by the extreme weather, prompting researchers to warn that such events will become more common and intense due to climate change. In Italy, firefighters carried out numerous rescue operations and evacuated 200 people from the town of Cogne. As Switzerland and other European countries continue to face severe weather events, the need to adapt and prepare for future climate challenges becomes increasingly urgent.
