Chinese Rocket Crashes in Fiery Explosion Shortly After Accidental Launch

Beijing Tianbing Technology, also known as Space Pioneer, reported that the first stage of its Tianlong-3 rocket detached from its launch pad during a test due to structural failure and landed in a hilly area of Gongyi in central China. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported. Parts of the rocket caused a local fire but it has since been extinguished and no injuries were reported. The Tianlong-3 rocket is a partly reusable rocket under development by Space Pioneer, one of a few private-sector rocket makers in China that have grown rapidly in recent years.

Although falling rocket debris after launches is not uncommon in China, it is rare for part of a rocket under development to detach from its test site and crash. The first stage of the Tianlong-3 rocket ignited normally during a hot test but later detached due to structural failure. The rocket landed close to a mile away from the test site. The performance of the Tianlong-3 rocket is said to be comparable to SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which is also a two-stage rocket.

Space Pioneer became the first private Chinese firm to send a liquid-propellant rocket into space in April 2023 with the launch of the Tianlong-2 rocket. The development of reusable rockets by Chinese commercial space companies has been on the rise since 2014 when private investment in the industry was allowed by the state. Test sites for these companies can be found along China’s coastal areas for safety reasons, but some are also located deep in the country’s interior, like Space Pioneer’s test center in Gongyi, Henan province.
